chameckilerner is a 29 years collaboration between Rosane Chamecki and Andrea Lerner, an interdisciplinary duo working in the intersection of dance and time-based media. Their body of works includes dance performances, video, and installation pieces.
Chamecki and Lerner are both natives of Curitiba, Brazil, where they received a B.A. in Dance from Parana’s Pontific Catholic in 1988. Together they moved to New York City in 1989 and 1993 created their first piece, Jackie & Judy, which premiered at The Bessie Schoenberg Dance.
chameckilerner is the recipient of various fellowships and grants for their multidisciplinary work, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts, NYFA Fellowship, NYSCA, NEFA, Jerome Foundation, Rockefeller MAP Fund, SIEMENS, ALTRIA, Greenwall Foundation, among others.
chameckilerner work has been presented in the US by The Kitchen, DTW, The Joyce Theater, Performance Space 122, Central Park SummerStage, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Mass MoCA, Diverseworks, Jacob’s Pillow, American Dance Festival, among others. In addition, their work toured extensively in both South America and Europe.
From 2003-2004, Chamecki and Lerner were the Artistic Directors CASA HOFFMANN, a Center for Movement Studies, Curitiba, Brazil. This influential space devoted to the exploration of new languages and aesthetics in movement opened in June 2003 and brought international artists, scholars, thinkers, and curators of movement and performance to engage with the local artists and arts community.
In 2007, the boundaries of their work blurred when chameckilerner displaced the choreographic work from the stage to the screen, making it more interdisciplinary. This new body of work featured in group shows including The Contemporary Art Festival SESC-VideoBrasil, Tupi or Not Tupi at Museum Oscar Niemeyer – Brazil, BLUEPRINT at MOCA Tucson, Boca Raton Museum of the Arts – Florida, Wexner Center for The Arts – Ohio, Philadelphia Museum of Dance/BARNES foundation – Pennsylvania, Flint Institute of the Arts – Michigan, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, SOFT POWER-Arte Brasil at Kunsthal KAdE in The Netherland, PERFORMA 09, INVISIBLE DOG, Ron Mandos Gallery – Netherlands, and THE BOILER- PIEROGI GALLERY – New York, to name a few.
chameckilerner video work also was part of an extensive list of Film and Dance Film festivals in the US, Canada, Brazil, and Europe. Flying Lesson won the 36th Dance on Camera Festival at Lincoln Center (2008) and Best Experimental Film Award at the Brooklyn International Film Festival(2008). Samba #2 won the Honorable Prize at the InShadow Festival, Portugal, and at the San Francisco Dance Film festival, the U.S. Recently, Samba #2 was acquired by the Voorlinden Museum, In The Netherlands.
chameckilerner was a resident at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center in 2009, at EMPAC (Curtis R. Priem ExperimentalMedia and Performing Arts Center at Rensselaer), in 2014-15, and the YADDO Foundation in 2018. chameckilerner was a 2019 Artists in Residence at the ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG Foundation and a Gibney DIP Residency Artist. Most recently, they became a recipient of the Fellowships at The Bogliasco Foundation In Italy.
SAMBA #2 is part of the exhibition Histórias Brasileiras at MASP – Museum de Arte de São Paulo), Brazil, in 2022. Their next planned New York show is at The Chocolate Factory in the fall of 2023.
