Bio


chameckilerner is a 30-year collaboration between Rosane Chamecki and Andrea Lerner, an interdisciplinary duo working in the intersection of dance and time-based media. 

Chamecki and Lerner are natives of Curitiba, Brazil, and together they moved to New York City in 1989 and 1993 and created their first piece, Jackie & Judy, which premiered at The Bessie Schoenberg Dance Theater. They have been working together ever since.

chameckilerner is the recipient of various fellowships and grants for their multidisciplinary work, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts, NYFA Fellowship, NYSCA, NEFA, Jerome Foundation, Rockefeller MAP Fund, SIEMENS, ALTRIA, Greenwall Foundation, among others.

chameckilerner’s work has been presented in the US by The Kitchen, DTW, The Joyce Theater, Performance Space 122, The Chocolate Factory Theater, Central Park SummerStage, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Mass MoCA, Diverseworks, Jacob’s Pillow, American Dance Festival, among others. In addition, their work toured extensively in both South America and Europe. 

2003-2004, Chamecki and Lerner were the artistic directors of CASA HOFFMANN, a center for movement studies in Curitiba, Brazil. This influential space devoted to the exploration of new languages and aesthetics in movement opened in June 2003. It brought international teachers, scholars, thinkers, and curators of movement and dance to engage with the local artists and arts community.

In 2007, chameckilerner premiered EXIT at The Kitchen in New York City. The piece was an artistic suicide of the duo known as chameckilerner. In EXIT, they investigate the possibility of extinction and reinvention; EXIT marked the beginning of chameckilerner’s interest in video and installation. This new body of work was featured in group shows, including Historias Brasileiras _MASP( Museum de Arte de Sao Paulo), The Contemporary Art Festival Sesc-VideoBrasil, Tupi or Not Tupi at Museum Oscar Niemeyer in Curitiba, Brazil, BLUEPRINT at MOCA Tucson, Boca Raton Museum of the Arts in Florida, Wexner Center for The Arts in Ohio, Philadelphia Museum of Dance/BARNES foundation in Pennsylvania, Flint Institute of the Arts, Michigan, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, SOFT POWER-Arte Brasil at Kunsthal KAdE in The Netherland, PERFORMA 09, INVISIBLE DOG in New York, Ron Mandos Gallery, Netherlands, and THE BOILER- PIEROGI GALLERY, NY, to name a few. The Voorlinden Museum In The Netherlands has recently acquired their work.

chameckilerner was a resident at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center in 2009, at EMPAC (Curtis R. Priem ExperimentalMedia and Performing Arts Center at Rensselaer), Troy, in 2014-15, and the YADDO Foundation in 2018. Chameckilerner was a 2019 Artist in Residence at the ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG Foundation and a Gibney DIP Residency Artist. In 2020, they received the Fall 2020 Fellowships at The Bogliasco Foundation In Italy. 

Aging Prelude premiered at the Chocolate Factory Theater in NYC in October 2023. This piece marks chameckilerner’s return to live performance after a hiatus of 15 years. Rosane and Andrea thank Map Fund and The Chocolate Factory Theater for supporting this work.
