ROSANE CHAMECKI and ANDREA LERNER, aka chameckilerner, is a 27-year collaboration between Rosane Chamecki and Andrea Lerner. Over these years, they created a body of work that includes dance performances, video, and installation pieces.

As Andre Lepecki wrote as early as 1993, at Tanz Actuelle when he first saw their work: “it is important to understand the choreographic reformulation proposed this season by choreographers Andrea Lerner and Rosane Chamecki … the will to break a tradition that by now suffocates the dance.

Their performance work has been presented in the US by The Kitchen, DTW, The Joyce Theater, Performance Space 122, Central Park SummerStage, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Mass MoCA, Diverseworks , Jacob’s Pillow, American Dance Festival, among others. chameckilerner has toured extensively throughout Brazil as well as Canada, Venezuela, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Portugal, The Netherlands, UK, Austria, Germany, Denmark, Finland, and Romania.

chameckilerner is the recipient of various fellowships and grants including the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008, The Foundation for Contemporary Arts, NYFA, NYSCA, Jerome Foundation, Rockefeller Map Funds, Siemens, among others.

In 2007, chameckilerner premiered EXIT at The Kitchen in New York City. The piece was an artistic suicide of the duo known as chameckilerner. In EXIT, they investigate the possibility of extinction and reinvention and marked the beginning or chameckilerner’s interest in video and installation.

Supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008, their first short video, FLYING LESSON won the Jury Award at the 36th Dance on Camera Festival at Lincoln Center, was showed in more than twenty international film festivals and broadcasted on Channel 13’s REEL NEW YORK, in the UK, Australia, and the Netherlands.

In 2009, during a residency at the Robert Wilson’s WATERMILL CENTER, chameckilerner, in collaboration with Phil Harder filmed THE LINE and THE COLLECTION. Their next two videos were CONVERSATION WITH BOXING GLOVES BETWEEN CHAMECKI AND LERNER, commissioned by PERFORMA ’09 and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and JACKIE & JUDY, an ode to Norman McLaren’s PAS DE DEUX. In 2012, awarded an NYSCA grant, chameckilerner produced CHAPLIN-A-DEUX and EXERCISE #4 during a residency at The Basilica, Hudson, NY.

In 2013-2014, they worked on two video installations, ESKASIZER and SAMBA #2, through a residency at EMPAC-Troy, NY.

SAMBA #2 premiered in May ‘14 at the group show TUPI OR NOT TUPI at Museum Oscar Niemeyer, Brazil, and won HONORABLE PRIZE at both the 2014 San Francisco Dance Film Festival and the INSHADOW Festival in Portugal. It was selected to a number of festivals including PODfest – Festival of Digital Poetics, Brazil; Long Leggs Festival at DCTV, USA; the International Video Dance Festival Agite y Sirva in Mexico; ScreenDance Festival, Sweeden; Encuentro Nacional de Danza, Torreón, México; Cinéma Jean Eustache de Pessac, Bordeaux, France, the LOIKKA Dance Film Festival, Finland, and Festival Videobrasil, São Paulo, Brazil, Wexner Center for The Arts in Columbus, Ohio, and SOFT POWER-Arte Brasil at Kunsthal KAdE, The Netherland, Leeds International Film Festival, UK; The Indiefest Film Award, USA; and the Hamilton International Film Festival, in Canada.

ESKAZISER, a 4-channel time-based installation, premiered at EMPAC in January 2015, followed by an exhibition at WASP (Working Art Space and Production), in Romania and at DANÇA EM FOCO, Brazil. In February 2016, ESKASIZER opened a 6-week run at THE BOILER, the Annex space at Pierogi Gallery in New York. ESKASIZER was on view at The Flint Institute of Arts in Michigan in 2016, followed by a run during the San Francisco Dance Film Festival and at Bennington College.

In 2015, chameckilerner had a retrospective of their videos at the Festival DANÇA EM FOCO, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For the retrospective, they created 2 more works: BETWEEN CHAMECKI AND LERNER and EXERCISE #4. In February 2016, chameckilerner showed ESKASIZER at Pierogi’s gallery The Boiler.

In 2017 chameckilerner was in residency at YADDO, followed by a Spring ’18 semester teaching at Sarah Lawrence College, and in 2019 they were Artists in Residence at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and at Gibney DIP Residency Artist. 

Their series RESIST, an action, performance, and sound installation, has taken place during the Women’s March in Washington, DC, at the Sanctuary during Armory Show 2017, in the form of an improvised dance piece in collaboration with six students from Barnard College in 2019, in the form of an audio installation and action with the audience during the 21st Contemporary Art Biennial Sesc_Videobrasil, in São Paulo, Brazil, and in the form of an action at Washington Square Park as part of the Dance Raising initiative.

chameckilerner is a 2020 Bogliasco Fellow, now to take place in the fall of 2021.
